Developing countries want WTO talks to resume

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 10:Nearly 30 emerging and developing countries called here Saturday for the resumption of collapsed WTO trade talks, urging rich countries to significantly pry open their markets to agricultural products, reports AFP. The 23 emerging countries of the Group of 20 and four representatives of developing countries declared in a statement they were "ready to immediately resume the negotiations and work toward their rapid resumption." "This is an excellent chance to put the Doha Round back on track," said Brazil's Foreign Minister Celso Amorim of the two- day meeting. "What is at stake is the international order," Amorim said at a news conference. "If we don't produce results that preserve the multilateral system in the trade arena, how are we going to preserve the international order in the face of terrorism, nuclear proliferation, drug trafficking, smuggling?" he said. read more.

Tiger, Federer winning majors left and right

Two sets. In the end, on paper, that's all that separated Roger Federer from a true Grand Slam this year. Two sets. And as he lived it up into the wee hours of Monday with his inner circle at a bistro in Manhattan's trendy Meatpacking District, celebrating the U.S. Open title that gave him three major championships in 2006, Federer took a moment to ponder what could have been. "It hit me last night, you know, when I actually realized that I've been in all major finals in the same year: I was so close to winning a Grand Slam," Federer said Monday during a 20-minute interview with a small group of reporters at a Midtown hotel. "But I'm very happy with three, of course." As well he should be. Federer went 27-1 at tennis' four premier tournaments, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon before his triumph at Flushing Meadows. read more.

After previous delays, Monterrico Metals expects to seek permission to develop Peru's Rio Blanco copper deposit early next year. Former AIM star Monterrico, which still has more than £10 million cash after losing £2.2 million in the six months to June, hopes its long-awaited bankable feasibility study on the Rio Blanco copper and molybdenum project in northern Peru will be ready in four months. The company, where former British ambassador to Peru and Falkland Islands governor Richard Ralph has replaced Robert Guy as chairman, estimates Rio Blanco could hold as much as 7.2 million tonnes of copper and 287,000 tonnes of molybdenum and says it intends to ask the Peruvian authorities in the first quarter of 2007 for a permit to mine. Since June's general election installed a mining-friendly government in Lima, Ralph and chief operations officer Ray Angus (who knows major Chile-focused copper group Antofagasta well) say they expect a favourable decision. read more.

Held to ransom in the sporadic siege of the Bolivian state

Latin American cities are typically based around a central square flanked by a cathedral, city hall and other municipal buildings. Not El Alto. La Ceja, the centre of Bolivia's third-largest city, is a grimy, bustling commercial district of pot-holed roads, belching minibuses, street vendors and packs of stray dogs. The air - thin and cold at 4,100m (13,450ft) above sea level - smells of poverty: a mixture of unwashed clothes, rotting vegetables and urine. . read more.

Trojans fourth at Highland Doubles Tournament

The Chesterton varsity boys tennis team finished fourth place at the eight-team Highland Doubles Tournament on Saturday. The Trojans top performances came with third place finishes at number three and four doubles. At number three doubles, Sam Silverglade and Kevin Kokesh teamed together, while at number four doubles, it was Jack Lines and Bruce Ruhmann. I was very pleased with fourth doubles, Chesterton coach Mike Stiles said. I was hoping they would get two victories today and they did. I want to keep on building and gaining confidence for them. Thats the one thing I wanted to pull out of this tournament. Our third doubles also played well together, even though they had never played together before. At number two doubles, Nick Kendall and Aaron Dittman placed fourth overall and Gerard Pannekoek and Zach Stemer finished sixth at number one doubles. read more.We would like to encourage you to come back soon and scout out the additional resources we'll have.
